I'm so tired of hearing
All these coined phrases -
Claiming all their little titles deserve respect.
And if you don't do so,
It's you they reject.

"Respect your elders."
"Respect your teachers."
"Respect your parents."
"Respect your peers."

They always end with perfect little entitlements
Such as, "They gave you life,"
Or, "They give you an education,"
No matter if it's you in strife.

I may be picky, I may be vein -
I may be naïve; but it's all the same.
We're looking in the wrong place,
Just relying on a name.

I respect the trials you faced.
I respect your patience to help me learn.
I'm happy enough to be alive.
I know I don't know you, so I will try.
But none of this is enough.

You cannot earn respect with a mere title.
For I have seen children left parentless -
Because their own blood didn't care.
And I have seen the elderly take life.
Not a cold drop of mercy to spare.

I do not know you well enough,
So I will try to be polite.
But if you threaten my rights as a human,
Don't expect me not to fight.

This is good stuff. I like your angle. Interesting note about the elderly... I've known quite a few who milk their age, knowing they can get away with certain things due to the presumption that 'oh, but they're old, they've suffered, let it go.' I've also heard some rather grisly old folks murder tales. Some are so bizarre they're almost "funny."

Myself, I have a "innocent until guilty" tab with respect. I respect elders, superiors, et cetera as a means of preserving social order... but respect does not preclude others from, well, disrupting the order. Then, nope.
